Don graduated from the University of Michigan in 1973 with a degree in economics, and was admitted to the Bar in 1976, the same year he received his J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy.

Don retired in 2018 after many years practicing law in Michigan. He now spends his time skiing in the Gaylord area, sailing during warmer months, and spending time at his Burt Lake home with his wife, son, daughters, and grandchildren.
